Review "I want to tip my hat to P.H. Longstaff...." Peter H. Salus the bookworm "Longstaff presents a compelling case that an interdisciplinary approach is required to make sense of the often bewildering developments in the digital information economy. The Communications Toolkit is an intellectual tour de force that will become an essential reference in the understanding of communications networks and the convergence of the communications and computer industries."--Allan Brown, Australian Key Centre for Cultural and Media Policy, Griffith UniversityPlease note: Endorser gives permission to excerpt from quote. "Clear, rich, deep, and eminently useful, Longstaff's Communications Toolkit provides the single best analysis to date of what the digerati of the information age have dubiously termed 'convergence,' examining its economic and policy context and the forces behind it. A must read for everyone involved with the information economy!"--Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard UniversityPlease note: An umlaut appears over the "o" in "Schonberger." "This book provides an intelligent, comprehensive, and accessible guide to the tools and strategies that organizations need to succeed in the turbulent world of new communication and information networks. It marks a refreshing break from the simplistic triumphalism that provided the smoke and mirrors for the dot com boom by offering practical ways to think about tough issues like convergence, competition, cooperation, and diversity in an information society. Longstaff's insights on government regulation alone make this essential reading for everyone with a stake in communication policy today."--Vincent Mosco, Professor, School of Journalism and Communication, Carleton UniversityPlease note: Endorser gives permission to excerpt from quote. About the Author P. H. Longstaff is Associate Professor of Television, Radio, and Film at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University, and a Research Associate at Harvard University's Program on Information Resources Policy.

Ideology in Cold Blood: A Reading of Lucan's Civil War

Ideology in Cold Blood: A Reading of Lucan's Civil War

Author: Shadi Bartsch
Type: eBook
Date Released: 2001
Format: pdf
Language: English
Page Count: 276
Isbn10 Code: 0674005503
Isbn13 Code: 9780674005501

Review The problem of Lucan's stance is notorious, and it is the focus of Bartsch's book...She makes her own gripping contribution to the dossier of Lucanian despair in her first two chapters; but she believes that ultimately such interpretations sell the poet short, as an artist and a person. Her Lucan, both inside and outside his poem, is a Sartrean existentialist or a Rortyan moral ironist, who accepts the evanescence of traditional moral and political verities but who behaves as if his ideology matters anyhow and makes his choice regardless. Hence the "ideology in cold blood" of her title: Lucan knows, and spellbindingly demonstrates, that Liberty is a cipher, but he commits himself to it none the less. Bartsch has put her finger on a key issue, and her passionate book is a useful check to the establishment of a new orthodoxy on Lucan. --Denis Feeney (Times Literary Supplement ) This could be that elusive creature, an Important Book. --Gideon Nisbet (Bryn Mawr Classical Review ) This is a stimulating work, which I find has provoked many questions about Lucan's poem, about liberal irony, and about history...The strengths of this book lie in its brevity, in its integration of detailed analyses with broader theoretical issues, and in its accessibility. It addresses a question which is of relevance to not only Lucanians, or Latinists, or classicists, but anyone who thinks about the politics of literature. --Ellen O'Gorman (Classical World ) Bartsch goes far beyond the boundaries of Lucan's Civil War itself. Readers interested in Latin literature in general, in the civil wars that ended the Republic, in the political context of the first centuries B.C.E. and C.E., in questions of human response to political repression long after Lucan, and those interested in Lucan himself as poet and conspirator, will want to read Ideology in Cold Blood. Bartsch has taken two prevailing camps of criticism--Lucan as "nihilist" and Lucan as "partisan"--and proposed an elegantly argued third alternative: Lucan as "political ironist." (Choice ) Ideology in Cold Blood provides a strikingly dissident approach to Lucan in that it aims to weld together a text-oriented focus, a political reading of the Civil War and a discussion of Lucan's political activities, i.e. his involvement in the Pisonian conspiracy. Bartsch's decision to include a biographical approach in her analysis should not be taken for bland naivety coming at a time when influential scholars on Lucan have come to reject this approach for the blatant fallacies that it entails. Bartsch offers something completely novel in this area, for it is entirely obvious that her sympathies do not lie with forms of historical reconstructionism in which the biographical data are simply made to correlate with the presumed political message of the poem...[Bartsch's book] will surely be ranked among the best works on the poet and I strongly recommend it to scholars interested in the literature of the Principate and in the role of Roman political epic. --Marc Kleijwegt (Scholia ) This well-argued, highly readable, and impressively documented book takes on a mammoth task, namely to sum up, categorize by dichotomy, and reconcile the two main schools of thought on Lucan's masterpiece. Her predecessors she divides into two camps, loosely speaking traditionalists, who see the poem as a sincere attack on current political reality from a Republican standpoint, and deconstructionists, for whom the very language of the poem with its reliance on paradox and self-mocking inversion embodies in the text the poet's total nihilism. --Michael Dewar (Phoenix ) About the Author Shadi Bartsch is Professor of Classical Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago.

Health Psychology in Practice

Author: Charles Abraham, Susan Michie
Type: eBook
Date Released: 2004
Format: pdf
Language: English
Page Count: 434
Isbn10 Code: 1405110899
Isbn13 Code: 9781405110891

Review "Michie & Abraham have produced a truly comprehensive text based around the competencies required to train as a health psychologist in the UK. It will be required reading for all in such training and, because of the breadth and salience of UK health psychology training, the book will also be of value to a wide range of other applied psychologists and social scientists in the UK and elsewhere." Professor Derek Johnston, University of Aberdeen, Chair Elect, BPS Division of Health Psychology "This book tackles the 'bricks and mortar' of how to do health psychology, on both practical and academic levels. Adopting a down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach and written with great clarity, its cohesive and integrated style makes it easy to read and digest. Essential reading and an invaluable reference for all health psychologists who want to be fully professionally qualified and well informed about what is happening in Britain, all advanced researchers in the field including those training at doctoral level, students contemplating training for chartership, and their supervisors." Suzanne Skevington, Professor of Psychology, University of Bath "The publication of this book is particularly timely as the framework for Stage 2 training of Health Psychologists in the UK continues to roll out. The book offers a clear rationale and account of the UK Health Psychology training framework, together with comparative accounts of training models in the US, Australia & Europe. Subsequent sections clearly illustrate the competencies that health psychologists are required to demonstrate at the end of their period in the areas of research, consultancy and interventions, training and teaching and professional practice, with examples of how these competencies can be acquired in practice. With relevant illustrative examples and clear linkages between current practice and the competencies underpinning Stage 2 training, this book will be an invaluable resource for prospective and current trainees and supervisors in health psychology. This volume will do much to define and clarify the roles and competencies of health psychologists in the UK, and will quell the anxieties of those wishing to embark on health psychology training, concerned about the need to acquire a potentially daunting array of competencies. It will also help to bring alive the academic knowledge base of health psychology for students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, by offering clear linkages between theory, research and practice." Professor Nichola Rumsey, Research Director, Centre for Appearance Research, Department of Psychology, UWE Bristol "Published with the British Psychological Society, this readable and practical text will surely form the standard introduction to this maturing field. It covers training models, research (including design and even writing grant applications), consultancy and interventions, training and teaching, and professional roles and practice. " The Scientific and Medical Network Review "Much of the material has a value for health professionals other than just psychologists, such as the chapters on planning research projects, analysing and reporting data in health research, designing and conducting qualitative studies, carrying out systematic reviews, and writing for publication." Dental Health Volume 45, no 2 From the Back Cover Published by Blackwell in association with the British Psychological Society (BPS), Health Psychology in Practice provides a comprehensive overview of the competences required for professional training in the UK (BPS Stage 2 Qualification in Health Psychology). Sections cover the areas of research, consultancy and teaching and training competencies as well as describing some of the professional roles that health psychologists are developing within the National Health Service and other organisations. The book details the requirements of the qualification, including the assessment procedures, and sets out what trainees must be able to do in order to attain it. The final chapter contains a series of individual commentaries on health psychology training in a variety of countries, which will be of great interest to an international audience. Susan Michie and Charles Abraham have both helped to establish the Stage 2 qualification and so are ideally placed to edit this text.

From This smart and good-humored addition to the current werewolf wave, the first in the Deviants series, should tickle the fancy of girls who like their genre reading spicy without being crude. Emily Webb, 16, is a geek very aware of the glamorous crowd at school, and even more conscious of her uncomfortably curvaceous body. When the class’ other Emily is murdered, Emily W.’s relatively quiet existence gets left behind. Those familiar with contemporary werewolf plotting will recognize Emily W.'s shape-shifting well before she does but will nevertheless enjoy the ride as she sleuths the other Emily’s death, gets on the literal scent track of an unidentified but highly attractive boy, and creates havoc at parties she once never considered attending. Intercut between these high-action chapters are scenes from Emily W.’s interrogation by what is clearly an evil force. This conceit proves an effective and unusual way of alerting readers to the potential of Emily W.’s werewolf world. Grades 8-11. --Francisca Goldsmith Review “Jeff Sampson’s debut delivers the goods-it’s exciting, witty, and impossible to put down. The best kind of page-turner.” (Michael Grant, New York Times bestselling author of the GONE series ) “Emily is smart, funny, fierce, and just generally kicks ass. The otherworldly mysteries she uncovers will keep you guessing all the way to the final page.” (K.A. Applegate, author of Animorphs and Remnants ) “Addictive and suprising. I couldn’t wait for night to fall to see what Emily would do next!” (Lauren Kate, New York Times bestselling author of the Fallen series ) “Should leave readers eager for the next book.” (Publishers Weekly ) “Will have readers clamoring for the next book.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) ) “A smart and good-humored addition to the current werewolf wave.” (Booklist ) “Emily’s attractive personality, drab on the surface but with emerging panache, easily holds readers’ attention, especially during her feral nighttime prowls. Intriguing.” (Kirkus Reviews ) “While the paranormal transformations will tempt fans of the genre and make a good hook for readers, it’s Emily’s transformation into a confident young woman who is more comfortable in her skin and willing to stick up for herself and others that makes this book a strong addition.” (School Library Journal )

Review 'This isn't just a history of riots and revolts: because each disturbance has to be placed in context, this is a political history which is made all the more interesting because it concentrates on the flashpoints, and the events which caused them. ' - The Guardian '![an] ambitious and erudite chronicle of protest in the capital!assiduously researched...' - The Times 'Clive Bloom's rigorous examination and analysis of radical protest in the UK throughout the ages stretches across 600-odd pages, and justifies every word. Acts of violent rebellion in the distant past are discussed, with their relevance to modern times cleverly pointed up, and Bloom colourfully evokes insurrections from AD 60 onwards. Little wonder, in fact, that JG Ballard was generous in his praise for an earlier edition of the book.' -- Barry Forshaw, The Good Book Guide Reviews of 1st edition (Pan): 'An exhilarating rush through countless riots, insurrections and full-blown street wars...written in a racy and accessible style...As I read this superb history, I looked out at my quiet suburban garden, disappointed not to hear the sound of trumpets.' - J. G Ballard, Daily Telegraph 'A breathless but exhilarating journey from Boudica to such recent events as the aftermath of September 11th and the march of the Countryside Alliance, Bloom's viewpoint is nicley balanced, critical of government and especially of the police, but not unreasonably so, and not too passionately keen that the rebels should win every time.' - Times Literary Supplement 'Seamless, full of information, connections and insights.' - Juliet Gardiner, BBC History Magazine ' [A] masterful study.' - Max Dunbar, 3:AM Magazine 'Clive Bloom's rigorous examination and analysis of radical protest in the UK throughout the ages stretches across 600-odd pages, and justifies every word. Acts of violent rebellion in the distant past are discussed, with their relevance to modern times cleverly pointed up, and Bloom colourfully evokes insurrections from AD 60 onwards. Little wonder, in fact, that JG Ballard was generous in his praise for an earlier edition of the book. Violent London is a thoroughgoing literary exploration of London's 'secret' history, from the world of radicals and subversives (including Wat Tyler to the Anti-Globalization Movement via the Gordon Riots, the Cato Street Conspirators, the Suffragettes, Mosleyites and the IRA)'. - Barry Forshaw, Good Book Guide About the Author CLIVE BLOOM is Emeritus Professor of English and American Studies at Middlesex University, UK. Widely published and Series Editor of Palgrave Macmillan's Crime Files series, he is the author of Literature, Politics and Intellectual Crisis in Britain Today (Palgrave Macmillan, 2000) and Cult Fiction (Palgrave Macmillan 1996), amongst many other titles.

From Trouillot, a widely respected scholar of Haitian history, has experienced firsthand how the recounting of historical "truth" can be manipulated to serve the interests of a particular group in power. Nevertheless, he rejects the facile proposition that history is no more than self-justifying propaganda written by the "winners" of conflict. Rather, he suggests that we can gain a broader and more accurate view of past events by striving to listen to a broader spectrum of voices. While recognizing that competing groups and individuals may lack equal access to modes of communication, he maintains that the variety of voices is there; we simply have to work harder to hear them. To illustrate this point, Trouillot examines the untold aspects of the Haitian independence struggle as well as the ongoing conflict over the "true" legacy of Columbus. Trouillot is a first-rate scholar with provocative ideas; general readers may find themselves somewhat lost in his discourses, but serious students of history should find his work a feast for the mind. Jay Freeman Review Now that so many grand projects of the past are up for reappraisal, Michel-Rolph Trouillot interrogates history, to ask how histories are in fact produced. . . . A beautifully written book, exciting in its challenges. --Eric R. Wolf"An accessible book filled with wisdom and humanity." --Bernard Mergen, American Studies International"Aphoristic and witty, [Silencing the Past] shows that the two senses in which history is made, by doers and by tellers, meet in moments of evidentiary silence. [A] hard-nosed look at the soft edges of public discourse about the past." --Arjun Appadurai"Trouillot is a first-rate scholar with provocative ideas. . . . His work [is] a feast for the mind." --Jay Freeman, Booklist"Trouillot makes the postmodernist debate come alive." --Choice"A sparkling interrogation of the past. . . . A beautifully written, superior book." --Foreign Affairs"Elegantly written and richly allusive. . . Silencing the Past is an important contribution to the anthropology of history. Its most lasting impression is made perhaps by Trouillot's own voice--endlessly agile, sometimes cuttingly funny, but always evocative in a direct and powerful, almost poetic way." --Donald L. Donham, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute"Written with clarity, wit, and style throughout, this book is for everyone interested in historical culture."--Civilization --This text refers to the edition.

Queenship and Voice in Medieval Northern Europe (Queenship and Power)

Author: William Layher
Type: eBook
Date Released: 2010
Format: pdf
Language: English
Page Count: 237
Isbn10 Code: 0230104657
Isbn13 Code: 9780230104655

Review “In this innovative study, Layher focuses on three late medieval Nordic queens—Agnes of Denmark, Eufemia of Norway, and Margareta of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—to show how they used their royal voices to augment their authority and advance their political goals in periods of political crisis, specifically, crises of male lordship. Recommended.”—CHOICE “This is a marvelous book, original, insightful and important, in which the author demonstrates how Nordic queens of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries employed their positions to shape public opinion and the course of history. Layher analyzes how, faced with crises of different sorts, Agnes, Eufemia and Margareta actualize the potential power of their positions through what he calls ‘the skillful instrumentalization of sound and voice.’ A necessary tonic for those interested in history and culture in the Middle Ages, Queenship and Voice in Medieval Northern Europe offers a fresh, bold examination of the forces at work in it.”—Stephen Mitchell, Professor of Scandinavian and Folklore, Harvard University “Arguing that voice is the marker of lordship, William Layher brings a sophisticated command of the history, languages, and literatures of medieval Scandinavia and literally gives voice to three medieval Scandinavian queens—Agnes of Denmark, Euphemia of Norway, and Margareta of Denmark. Connecting patron, poet, and audience across Scandinavian borders, Layher traces these queens’ struggle to hold and exercise political agency in moments of crisis, noting that the queen’s voice is most evident when the king is silent. An innovative study in terms of theory and the queens studied, Layher’s book complicates our understanding of queenship by examining not just the cultural production of texts but also the language of production and, more importantly, the voice of the patron filtered through the poet. It opens up a new dimension in the study of queens, influence, and power. Layher’s book resonates with polyvocal echoes of the acoustic interplay between the voice of the queen and the poet who speaks her mind in a dynamic literary and political performance. It is a compelling argument for looking closely not just at literary texts but at the nuances of spoken texts in an aural, oral society.”—Theresa Earenfight, Associate Professor of History, Seattle University “William Layher’s innovative and readable study furthers our understanding in key research areas central to contemporary medieval studies: women and lordship; literary studies; and media studies. Proposing a new approach to the problems of gender, voice, and agency, Layher’s book contributes to the major paradigm shift in literary studies that is moving the study of women’s literary patronage from the margins to the center and by so doing advancing the argument that women's contributions are critical to the growth of vernacular literature in the West. I expect this remarkable book to be widely reviewed and debated for many years to come.”—Ann Marie Rasmussen, Professor, Department of Germanic Languages and Literature, Duke University About the Author William Layher is Assistant Professor of Medieval German and Medieval Scandinavian Literature at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
